Bell Gardens
Bell Garden is a small, quiet city located in Los Angeles County. As of the 2010 national census, the population was 42,167. This was a decrease from 44,247 during the 2000 census. Bell Gardens is famous as one of five cities in LA County to permit casinos. The others are Gardena, Inglewood, Hawaiian Gardens and Commerce. Slot machines and dice games are however illegal. The city has a beautiful history that dates to the late 18th century when the region was first associated with a large plot of land that sat in the Rio Hondo area. Bell Gardens was in its past a huge agricultural center for immigrants trying to escape the Mexican government. Among them was one of California’s first families, the Lugos, who moved to the city in the 1770s. Bell Gardens is still relatively young as a city. From the time of its incorporation in 1961, Bell Gardens has grown from a population of only 3,000 to its current level. The median age in the city is 24. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Bell Gardens is 94 percent Hispanic, 4 percent Caucasian, .5 percent Asian, 1.5% of other ethnicities. Modern day Bell Garden is a 2.6 square mile region, and it retains only a small portion of the original Lugo family land grant, which is located at the site of the Casa Mobile home Park. In 1991 the park’s tenants, who own the land as well as the Lugo family’s original home, were successful in having Casa de San Antonio named as a State Historical Monument. Their effort ensures Don Lugo’s name and historic residence will be saved for future generations of Bell Gardens citizens and Californians to enjoy.
